Our site was recently designed with public use in mind.

It starts with a general hirearchy of tabs at the top with the services we provide. Featured programs and other upcoming programs are featured on the front page. Also a customer favorite is our rotating bookshelf with the New Items at the library. Each cover image provides a direct link to the item in the catalog, and is pulled from an RSS feed of new items added to our catalog.

The bottom footer is also similar to a drop down menu, which provides important (but not top level) information on all the pages of the our website.

Clinton-Macomb Public Library

The team at Clinton-Macomb Public Library considered a variety of open-source technologies when designing their new site (launched June 1, 2009), but ultimately decided that those content management systems did not provide enough flexibility in interface design.

The in-house team coordinated a 9-month redesign that utilizes a variety of widgets (such as IM and Bookletters content), database programming, and RSS feeds to pipe new information into the site.

Using iframes, the team created a seamless transition from the main portion of the site to the online catalog, marrying the two together in look and feel.

Committed to utilizing usability research in their design, the team at Clinton-Macomb redesigned the information archtitecture of the site based on extensive card-sorting exercises with over 300 patrons. The result is a tabbed-navigation design based on the most common categories patrons expected to see on a library website. The team also conducted over 15 usability tests to confirm their interface design was executed well.

A very nice redesign of the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, IL website. An excellent use of Drupal without looking like an out of the box Drupal website. The drop down advanced search for the catalog is excellent and new to the library world. The large search box front and center is also a great idea, for library websites are usually just a portal to our content.
